As all die-hard Game of Thrones fans already know, episode one of the intense, increasingly intricate series’s third season airs on HBO this Sunday 31 at 9pm. Here’s how to celebrate its triumphant return.
Drink the official Game of Thrones beer
Refreshment is coming: Cooperstown-based Brewery Ommegang has struck a partnership with the series and will be creating at least four GoT-themed brews between now and the end of 2014. The first, a golden blond ale called Iron Throne, has been released just in time for the new season and will be available on tap at multiple bars around the city. See below for a full list (complete as of press time, new bars will likely be added) and try your best not to get as hammered as the late king, Robert Baratheon. If you’d rather stay in, hit up any NYC Whole Foods store for the bottled version (around $10 for a 750 ml bottle).
Eat and drink like a resident of King’s Landing
The combination of meat and mead is a staple throughout the Seven Kingdoms. Try it at Gramercy Tavern(42 E 20th St between Broadway and Park Ave South; 212-477-0777, gramercytavern.com) in the form of German Schraml Mead ($8) and crispy duck leg with lentils, endive and chicory ($24). Or pair a rotating list of small plates such as Tasso ham ($6) with Nought mead from Enlightenment Wines in the Hudson Valley ($9), at Spuyten Duyvil(359 Metropolitan Ave at Havemeyer St, Williamsburg, Brooklyn; 718-963-4140, spuytenduyvilnyc.com). For a more medieval ambience—plus an extensive collection of more than 50 foreign and domestic brews—head to the Slaughtered Lamb Pub(182 W 4th St between Barrow and Jones Sts; 212-627-5262, slaughteredlambpub.com), which has a kitschy gaming dungeon with snarling werewolves and smiling skulls.
Practice your aim at an archery range
Develop the marksmanship skills of Arya Stark at Pro Line Archery Lanes(95-11 101st Ave between Woodhaven Blvd and 95th St, Ozone Park, Queens; 718-845-9280, archeryny.com). Rentals, instruction and two hours of shooting are available for $20 (children 16 and under can fire for $10). Or bone up on medieval battle gear at the Arms and Armor department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art(1000 Fifth Ave at 82nd St; 212-535-7710, metmuseum.org; suggested donation $12–$25), where you can examine rooms full of broadswords, banners, shields and more, including the field armor of King Henry VIII. It’s sure to fuel your excitement for the epic battles to come this season.
Defend the capital at the Game of Thrones exhibition
Browse costumes, props, armor and weapons from all three seasons at the touring Game of Thrones exhibition, which rolls into town a few days before the premiere. Fans can play the role of an archer along the walls of King’s Landing at the Blackwater Bay Interactive Experience, a video installation that puts you right in the middle of season two’s Battle of Blackwater Bay. After saving the city, take a seat on a replica Iron Throne for a photo op. 3 W 57th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves (gotexhibition.com). Mon–Fri 10am–8pm, Sat 11am–7pm, Sun 10am–4pm; free. Thu 28–Wed 3.

Professor Thom’s(219 Second Ave between 13th and 14th Sts; 212-260-9480, professorthoms.com) is a known destination among serious GoT viewers; Series author George R.R. Martin has even stopped by on occasion to watch episodes and mingle. New episodes are screened on 22 TVs and two projectors, with the sound cranked up and conversation kept to a minimum. Viewings are free, so you don’t need to be Lannister-rich to enjoy. The themed drink menu includes mead ($10), Ommegang’s Iron Throne brew ($7) and signature cocktails with names like the Dire Wolf and the Dragon’s Egg ($12). Free Jell-O shots are handed out whenever an important character dies, and new rules are often added: During one of last season’s episodes, celebratory shots were dispensed anytime the arrogant King Joffrey
got slapped. Get there early to snag a seat and discuss the plot twists with other buffs. Where to drink the Iron Throne beer
